James Wu 武剑琪
Music Director & Conductor · OCMS Symphony Orchestra

Originally from China, James (武剑琪) currently serves as the Music Director of the Ontario Cross-Cultural Music Society (OCMS) Symphony Orchestra and leads several vibrant community ensembles, such as the Toronto Saxophone Collective.
Praised by peers and collaborators as both “confident and competent,” James is increasingly recognized for the characteristic subtlety and efficiency of his conducting style. He views every concert cycle as a narrative opportunity, striving to lead both musicians and audiences on a cohesive journey from the first rehearsal to the final performance. James aspires to help musicians reach their full potential by guiding and supporting them musically. He finds the most meaning in seeing the genuine joy and engagement they bring to the stage.
Beyond the podium, James extends this passion for storytelling through his camera lenses. As a photographer and filmmaker, he has repeatedly collaborated with ensembles such as the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and the Myriad Ensemble. Through these multimedia productions, James seeks to market art music to a broader audience and inspire more people to experience the vitality of live performance.
James earned his Master of Music in conducting from the University of Toronto under the guidance of Dr. Gillian MacKay. Grateful and fortunate for the wisdom and positivity from all the teachers he has had the honour to study with, James strives to pass that same spirit on to those around him, on and off the podium.
Outside the realm of music, James cherishes moments spent with his wife and lifelong scuba-diving buddy, Canadian flautist and piccoloist Rachel Roe-Wu.
